Our History

The Richmond Boys Choir was established in 1996 as a collaborative project of Theatre IV, the Richmond Symphony, and the Boys & Girls Club of Richmond. The Choir was modeled after the internationally acclaimed Harlem Boys Choir and was an opportunity to provide young men in our community with music theory education, vocal training, professional performance opportunities and academic enrichment. In 1997, the Richmond Boys Choir was formally established as a non-profit organization and 25 young men became the first group representing “Richmond’s Ambassadors of Song.”

Our Members

Who We Are

We think it’s better to show rather than tell, so we’d like to share with you these links to give you an idea who we are and what we aim to do!

Why We Are

The Richmond Boys Choir seeks to provide a quality alternative for urban youth by creating a positive avenue that cultivates personal development and establishes a foundation of academic and social success.

Where We Are

The Richmond Boys Choir is located in the heart of the beautiful city of Richmond, the capital of Virginia. The Richmond Boys Choir loves this city. It’s home, and we aim to reach hearts and minds all over the city.

Our Impact

Over the last 24 years of service our organization has positively impacted the lives of more than 2,700 young men, awarding approximately $120,000 in continuing education scholarships, hosted benevolent concerts for the community and participated in numerous high-profile performances around the world. There are increased opportunities for enriching cultural exchanges between the Richmond Boys Choir members and diverse audiences in different venues through traveling an average of 20 or more high profile performances per season. Exactly 98% of all graduating members last season left to go on to college with scholarships that our organization provided; the other 2% went straight into careers. With the help of our tutors, 100% of our members last season were able to keep grades at or above a B (3.0) average and pass all SOL testing also 95% of members were recruited to participating in additional arts and cultural activities in the local community.

Members have also been able to communicate better with each other and people outside of the program. The tools that our program offers enables members to move forward with education or careers with superior knowledge and experience. The Richmond Boys Choir presents a very active role in the Community by offering small and large concerts and at the same time training young men to be leaders in the community creating long term benefits to not only the community at large but to their families. The Richmond Boys Choir’s program has been designed to provide hope for the future, an opportunity to channel musical talents into leadership, and a safe nurturing place to come each day after school where a compassionate cadre of adults provides musical training, academic assistance and personal development activities.
